What are Rwanda’s most popular tourist attractions?
Kigali, the lakes region, and the national parks are Rwanda’s most popular tourist attractions.
The tourist industry is among Rwanda’s fastest growing sectors, and the nation’s biodiversity and cultural attractions draw tourists from across the world.
Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is without a doubt the most popular tourist destination. The capital is famous for its rich cultural offerings, and there are multiple museums and art galleries, (such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial) which allow visitors to learn more about Rwanda’s heritage.
The Memorial specifically honours the memory of Rwandans killed during the genocide against the Tutsis in 1994.
Rwanda is also part of the African Great Lakes Region, and with 2,700km², Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest freshwater lake. Popular on-site activities include: kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking.
Additionally, Rwanda operates four National Parks. Akagera, Volcanoes, Nyungwe and Gishwati Mukura National Park are rich in biodiversity and home to unique flora and fauna. Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park are ideal for primates-trekking. Akagera National Park offers savannah tours, while Gishwati Mukura National Park is popular with birdwatchers.
